Watch out world. Lewis Capaldi has scooped two of the top prizes at the BRITS Awards tonight – the much-watched ceremony sometimes touted as the clearest guide to acts poised for international success.
The Scottish singer-songwriter, 23, won Best New Artist and Best Song. Capaldi is being tipped for further Stateside success, with his tear-jerking ballad “Someone You Loved” topping the Billboard Hot 100 last year. Capaldi’s tour this year incudes dates across Europe. He is in the U.S. and Canada in April and May.
He missed out on Best Male Solo Artist, which went to the rapper Stormzy, while best album went to another rapper, Dave, whose Psychodrama last year won the Mercury Prize.
The 2020 BRITS has slimmed down the number of awards and has a 50-50 split between men and women on its selection panel. Even so, this year’s awards faced criticism for its nominations dominated by male stars.
Women were omitted from nominations for the unisex categories Album of the Year, Best Group and Best New Artist. The only exception was Mabel, who was nominated for the last and was named Best Female Solo Artist.
Billie Eilish was named Best International Female Solo Artist and performed a live debut of the song “No Time To Die,” her theme for the James Bond film of the same name.
